Tentang Kol 1:15 ini, yang juga dipakai sebagai dasar oleh Arianisme, Philip Schaff memberikan komentar sebagai berikut:
"But PROTOTOKOS is not equivalent to PROTOKTISTOS or PROTOPLASTOS:... The meaning of the expression, therefore, is: born before every creature, i.e. before anything was made. The text indicates the distinction between the eternal generation of the Son from the essence of the Father, and the temporal creation of the world out nothing by the Son. Yet there is a difference between MONOGENES and PROTOTOKOS, which Athanasius himself makes: the former referring to the relation of the Son to the Father, the latter, to his relation to the world" [= Tetapi PROTOTOKOS (fist-born / dilahirkan pertama) tidak sama artinya dengan PROTOKTISTOS (first-created / diciptakan pertama) atau PROTOPLASTOS (first-formed / dibentuk pertama):.. karena itu, arti dari ungkapan itu adalah: dilahirkan sebelum setiap ciptaan, yaitu sebelum apapun dibuat. Text ini menunjukkan perbedaan antara tindakan kekal memperanakkan Anak dari hakekat Bapa, dan penciptaan alam semesta dari tidak ada menjadi ada, oleh Anak, dalam waktu. Tetapi ada suatu perbedaan antara MONOGENES (only begotten / satu-satunya yang diperanakkan) dan PROTOTOKOS (first-born / dilahirkan pertama), yang dibuat oleh Athanasius sendiri: yang pertama menunjuk pada hubungan Anak dengan Bapa, yang terakhir menunjuk pada hubungan-Nya dengan alam semesta] - 'History of the Christian Church', vol III, hal 746 (footnote).
